Nowadays the Eliava Institute of Bacteriophage, Microbiology and Virology (IBMV) continues its traditional work in applied Microbiology and Bacteriophage Research. The main aim of the ongoing scientific research is an elaboration of the ecologically safe bio-preparations and working out of the appropriate methodologies for their future applications for human and animal health protection, as well as in agriculture and environment protection.

The Eliava Institute implements the projects in the following fields:

• Bacteriophage Research
• Phage Diagnostic, Therapy and Prophylaxis
• Clinical Microbiology
• Food Microbiology
• Environmental Microbiology
• Infectious Immunology
• Biotechnology
• Microbial and Phage Genetics
• Microbial Risk assessment
• Biodefence
• Plant protection

At present Eliava scientists proceed with following research directions:

• Investigation of the etiological structure of human and animal bacterial pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant infections and development of specific phage preparations.
• Selection of new, specific bacteriophages with therapeutic potential and their detailed characterization;
• Elaboration of biological preparations, vaccines, sera, bacteriophages and enzymes against highly contagious human and animal pathogens;
• Ecological monitoring of bacterial pollution in water environments. Elaboration of the ecologically safe phage-based technologies for detection and eradication of the bacterial pathogens in these environments.
• Working out a novel strategy for phage-based bio-control of plant bacterial diseases.
Since the fifties of the last century Eliava Institute’s scientists have elaborated several dozens of bio-preparations, including 15 phage cocktails (mixtures), vaccines, diagnostic and therapeutic immune sera, bacterial preparations, enzymes, etc. Following preparations should be especially emphasized:

• Intesti-bacteriophage
• Pyo-bacteriophage
• Series of monophages
• Anthrax vaccine “STI-1”
• Heterogenic Immunoglobulin for treatments of Anthrax
• Improved probiotic bacterial preparations
• Enzyme “bilidase” (bacterial hyaluronidase)
• Anti-Staphylococcal heterogenic y -globulin and antitoxin

During the past decade Eliava Institute’s scientists regularly publish in a leading scientific journals, participate in well-known international conferences such as, American Society for Microbiology, Evergreen Phage Biology Meeting, Congress of the European Microbiologists, Congress of World Union of the Microbiology Societies, Chemical Biological Medical Treatment Symposia, etc.
Since 1994, scientist of the Eliava Institute received up to 30 international grants and scholarships, funded by various international funding agencies including GNSF, CRDF, ISTC, STCU, DTRA, INTAS, NATO, etc.
